Roses

Pink is the colour we most associate with Barbie and is the most popular rose colour too. Whether it be powder pink or a strong magenta, your local store will have the rose for your Barbiecore aesthetic.

Roses are a relatively low-maintenance plant that thrives in full sun or partial shade and can be grown as a border or edging along pathways or walkways.   Simply dig a hole the size of the root ball and use a granular fertiliser to feed before placing your rose in its place and filling it back in with soil and compost. Give the rose a good soak with water straight away after planting and deadhead when flowers fade to encourage new growth.

Foxgloves

This cottage garden favourite would fit in Barbie’s garden and is loved by pollinators too. Foxgloves produce statuesque spires of pink flowers, often speckled with darker pink inside and look great at the back of a border or as a centrepiece in containers.  We recommend digging a hole approximately twice as deep and three times as wide as the plant. Mix in general-purpose compost, horticultural sand and stone or potting grit to ensure good drainage and water when planted.

Echinacea

Echinaceas come in a myriad of colours including pink which is well suited to a fun, Barbie-inspired garden.  Its pink flowers will bloom for many weeks in summer and early autumn. It is ideal for your Barbiecore border, where it will attract bees and other pollinators with its cone-shaped centre, if you have a small balcony or yard, you can still create the Barbie effect as the plant is also compact enough for patio containers.

Dig a hole slightly wider than the root ball of the plant or choose a wide enough container with drainage holes for your little Barbie world.

Hydrangeas

Hydrangeas are beautiful deciduous shrub that will bring Barbiecore pink to a dark corner as it is ideal for a shady position, flowering all summer in a border or container. Available with mophead flowerheads in pink, Hydrangeas are a summer flower standout for both the garden and as a cut flower to bring the Barbie look into your home.

The best place to plant hydrangeas is in a sheltered location with sunny mornings and shady afternoons, simply dig the planting holes 2 feet wider than the root ball and water when in position.

Achillea

This cottage garden favourite is very popular with pollinators and its Barbie pink will fit in well with other shrubs and grasses. An ideal choice for wildlife-friendly gardens, it comes in many colours but its magenta-pink varieties with flat flower heads are suited to the Barbiecore trend.

Plant in a sheltered sunny spot outdoors and water regularly to keep the soil moist. We recommend cutting back faded flowerheads in autumn or leave to stand over winter to provide interest in the border.

Begonia

Begonias are also an ideal plant to make your dream Barbiecore garden a reality.  If you feel like immersing yourself in the happy pink colour, you really can’t go wrong with begonias that provide gorgeous long-lasting summer colour for pots and flower beds in sun or part shade.  These summer favourites are readily available and their ease to grow will result in Barbie flower power all summer long.

Begonias do best in partial shade or a spot that receives morning sun and afternoon shade so plant and enjoy!

Coleus

Flowers are not the only way to add Barbie pink to your garden, think foliage too! Coleus comes in a beautiful pink-leaved plant for patio pots, containers or hanging baskets.  Why not combine it with other pink plants for a sensational display?  Also known as Painted-nettle, coleus comes in vivid pinks to maroon pink, so fits well into a Barbie-styled garden.

They can be planted outside or can complement a Barbie interior as a houseplant too.  Coleus must have good soil drainage wherever placed and we recommend moving them indoors during the winter frosts.
