Swap the Christmas tree for a houseplant…

Houseplants Advice Houseplants

With the Christmas tree gone and the decorations packed away, home can suddenly feel a bit empty at this time of year. If, like us, you’re desperate for a bit of winter greenery, then a big and beautiful houseplant is your answer. Keep reading to find out why...

Why go big?

We love houseplants in all shapes and sizes, but when it comes to filling the gap left by a Christmas tree, big really is best!

Large houseplants transform the whole feel of a room in a way you simply can’t achieve with something smaller. Their large, luscious leaves deliver that laidback, tropical vibe, while their size makes them perfect for hiding unsightly areas or dividing up different areas within a room.

As well as transforming the feel of a space, big houseplants are actually easier to care for, too! Because their bigger pots contain more soil, they retain moisture better so can last longer without needing a drink.

Which houseplant is best for me?

Choosing the right houseplant for your space depends on a few different things, such as how bright your room is and how much attention you want to give it.

Here are a few of our favourite options for different types of space…

For bright and sunny rooms...

Fiddle Leaf Fig (Ficus lyrata)

A stunning statement plant with gorgeous, fiddle-shaped leaves. Fiddle Leaf Figs are happiest in bright, indirect light.

Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia)

As its name suggests, the Bird of Paradise will make your living room feel like you’re lounging on a sun-soaked beach. Just like the fiddle leaf fig, this is a real sun-lover that can grow very tall in the right conditions, making it the plant if you want to make a real impact!

For lower-light spaces...

ZZ Plant (Zamioculcas zamiifolia)

Famed for being practically unkillable, the ZZ plant needs minimal light and water. It might not grow as tall or as fast as other varieties, but its beautiful, dark green foliage more than makes up for it.

Snake Plant (Sansevieria trifasciata)

Another extremely tough variety, the Snake Plant has gorgeous, tall green stems, edged with vibrant yellow. It’s a great choice for corners that don’t get much sun.

For the easiest care...

Swiss Cheese Plant (Monstera deliciosa)

A true classic. Fast-growing,  easy to care for, and highly distinctive with those split leaves, the Monstera will adapt to a range of light conditions and grow quickly to fill the space it's in.

Kentia Palm (Howea forsteriana)

Elegant and relatively slow-growing, the gently curving fronds of the Kentia Palm give a gorgeous, tropical feel without needing much in return.
