Happy March everyone! After a very grey start to the year it finally feels like the weather’s taking a positive turn. There’s lots of lovely jobs to get stuck into this month, from sowing cherry tomatoes to making your own colourful planter – perfect for getting your garden ready all set for spring and beyond!
Sow cherry tomatoes
Who doesn’t love sweet, juicy cherry tomatoes?
March is the perfect month to start sowing your own tomatoes from seed. I’ve gone for the ‘Red Cherry’ variety from Fothergill’s Oh Sow Simple range.
To get started, fill a seed tray with peat free compost and lightly firm down the soil.
Then all you need to do is pop one seed per cell and cover with a fine layer of compost – no more than half a centimetre.
As tomato seeds are so tiny, it’s a good idea to water your seed tray from the bottom so you don’t accidentally wash them away.
Then all you need to do is pop the lid on and place them somewhere warm and sunny like a windowsill or greenhouse, making sure you check the soil every few days so it doesn’t dry out.
Make a spring planter
Whether you’re a lifelong gardener or you’re completely new, creating your own planter is such a great thing to do.
Not only will it look lovely today, it will keep on growing all spring, give you lots of lovely, lasting colour. It also makes for a really thoughtful Mother’s Day present!
To get started, you’ll just need a planter with drainage, some multi-purpose compost and a selection of spring plants from your local British Garden Centre.
Firstly, fill your planter three-quarters full with your compost. Then, with your plants still in their nursery pots, arrange them to find a layout that you’re happy with. Try and keep the bigger plants near the middle as a focal point, then fill in the gaps with the rest.
Once you’re happy, take each plant out of its pot and place it a small hole then fill in with compost.
A really nice extra touch for a spring planter is a few potted bulbs. These will give your planter an extra splash of colour when they burst into life in a week or two!
Pot up gladioli bulbs
Now’s a great time to plant up potted bulbs ready for summer.
I’ve gone for some gladioli as not only do they look stunning in the garden, they’re also perfect for cutting so I can fill my house with beautiful flowers this summer!
Simply fill your pot about two-thirds full, add two or three bulbs depending on the size of your pot, making sure the flat side is facing down, then cover over with compost and water well.
You’ll want to pop your pots somewhere sunny and frost-free like a greenhouse, where they’ll get a great head start for stronger, earlier blooms this summer.
