Happy September everyone - and happy Autumn! The start of a new season is always an exciting time, and there's plenty to be getting on with in your garden this month. So, without further ado, here are your top 3 jobs to be get stuck into this September…
Harvest time!
One of the best parts about September is getting to reap the rewards of all our hard work earlier in the year.
Remember those pumpkins we sowed back in May? They should be about ready to harvest now!
You’ll know yours are ready to pick when the foliage has died back and they’ve turned a nice bright shade of orange.
Aim to cut the horizontal stalk, leaving a T-shape on your pumpkins as this helps them store for longer.
Whatever fruit or veg you’re harvesting this month, a good pair of snips or secateurs make such a difference.
You can now get my absolute favourite Kent & Stowe Secateurs and Snips online: they’re a little bit more than other options but honestly, they’re worth every penny - mine never leave my side!
Cut back tired looking plants and divide perennials
As summer starts to fade, some of your plants might now be looking a little bit past their best.
September is the perfect time to give your garden a cut back and tidy up.
As well as clearing any overgrown plants, you can also dig up and divide perennials to help rejuvenate them, or to spread to other areas of your garden.
It’s really easy to do: simply dig up the plant, lay it on its side, then split right down the middle of the plant and its roots.
You can then re-plant these as normal in your garden!
Sow hardy annuals
If you’re a bit of an eager beaver like me, you can sow some hardy annuals this month to get a head-start on next year!
Sowing seeds now means they’ll flower earlier than if you waited until next spring.
It’s really simple to do – you’ll just need a seed tray, some seed-sowing compost and, of course, your seeds.
I’ve just sown some Cornflowers and Honeyworts, but other great varieties to sow now include poppies, marigolds and nigellas.
