Gardening with Eve: November

Autumn Gardening with Eve Advice Gardening With Eve

Happy November everyone! I've got some lovely jobs for you to get stuck into this month, from planting up snowdrop bulbs for beautiful blooms next year to making your own Paperwhites Daffodil bowl to enjoy in time for Christmas...

Give feathered friends a hand

With short days, low temperatures and limited natural food sources, November can be a really challenging time of year for small birds.

Thankfully, we can give them a helping hand!

If you haven’t already, now’s a great time to hang up some bird feeders in your garden. Not only will this provide a vital food source to your feathered friends, it means you get to enjoy watching them in all their glory!

We’ve got a great selection of bird feed and feeders both in our centres and online.

I'm a big fan of this 'no mess' British Garden Centres bird seed which is packed full of only the best nuts and seeds, meaning birds won't chuck the bits they don't want onto your lawn!

Plant snowdrops for stunning early blooms

Nothing brings me more joy than seeing the first snowdrops of the year.

If you fancy welcoming in the new year with some beautiful snowdrops of your own, then now’s the time to plant up your bulbs!

Snowdrops are happiest in partial shade and look lovely in little clusters, so I’m planting mine at the back of my beds in groups of five.

All you need to do is make a hole about 10cm deep – a bulb planter is great for this – and then pop in one bulb per hole, making sure the pointy side is facing up.

Cover it over with compost, give it a light water and that’s it!

Plant Paperwhite Daffodils for Christmas fragrance

Fancy growing your own indoor flowers in time for Christmas?

Paperwhite daffodils are one of my favourite things to plant. Not only do they look stunning with their elegant white flowers, they also have an amazing scent!

They’re commonly grown in glass bowls or vases, but I love how they look in a low terracotta pot. It’s completely up to you what you grow yours in, just make sure it has a drainage hole so your soil doesn’t get waterlogged.

To plant up, start with a layer of horticultural grit, then add a layer of good quality compost. Next add in your bulbs followed by more horticultural grit. Paperwhites can be planted very close to the surface so don’t worry about fully burying them.

Finally, give them a water and pop them outside somewhere frost-free. Once they start to shoot you can then bring them inside somewhere warm and sunny like a windowsill.
