Happy new year everyone! January is a great time to do some planning and prepping for a fresh new year of growing, whether that’s stocking up on seeds for your veg patch, or planting some hellebores to brighten up your garden. Keep reading to find out my top 3 jobs to get stuck into this month...
Plan your year and stock up on seeds
I always try and spend a bit of time in January planning what I want to grow more of this year.
Whether you’re after some lovely summer blooms or want to expand your veg patch, growing from seed is a brilliant, cost-effective way to try something different this year.
There’s so many reasons I love seeds: there’s hundreds of varieties to choose from, they’re super affordable, and it’s so rewarding seeing your plants go all the way from seed to crop!
As if that wasn’t enough to convince you, we’ve also just launched our big new year seed sale!
You can enjoy 30% off seeds or an amazing 50% off seeds if you have a Family Card.
If you’re new to growing from seed or just need a quick refresh on when to sow different varieties, you can download our super handy 12-Month Growing Guide.
Happy sowing!
Don't forget the birds!
We can stay warm and cosy indoors when it’s cold out, but spare a thought for our feathered friends who have to brave this freezing weather!
Winter is the most challenging time of year for small birds because of the low temperatures, short days and limited natural food sources.
Thankfully, we can lend them a helping hand!
If you haven’t already, now’s a great time to invest in a bird feeder or stock up on bird feed to keep yours topped up.
I like to try and hang one or two different types of feeders up, like a seed feeder and a fat ball cage, but every little really does help.
And the best part is you’ll be rewarded for your efforts with a garden full of lots of lovely birds!
You’ll find a great selection of bird feed and feeders at your local British Garden Centre, or you can stock up on our great value bags online.
Cut back & plant Hellebores
Hellebores are one of my absolute favourite winter flowers: I just love their dainty pink flowers!
If you’re already lucky enough to have some of your own, then now’s the time to cut back the old foliage.
Not only will this encourage them to produce those lovely flowers, it also helps prevent any diseases or mould forming.
And if you haven’t got a hellebore, then you can pick one up at your local British Garden Centre today!
