Gardening with Eve: April Appreciation

Jobs for April

Happy April everyone! Spring is officially here which I’m so excited about. Now that the weather’s warming up and everything’s bursting into life, there’s lots to be getting on with in the garden. So, without further ado, here’s my top jobs to get stuck into this month…

Clean your greenhouse

If you’ve got a greenhouse, now’s the perfect time to give it a bit of a spring clean.

Cleaning the glass on your greenhouse doesn’t just make it look nice and fresh - it’s also great for your plants as it allows more sunlight to reach them, helping them grow big and strong.

I like using patio cleaners as they’re great at removing moss and algae.

All you need to do is make up a batch (if using a concentrated solution), spray it all over your greenhouse, leave it for 10-15 minutes and then scrub or rinse it off.

If you want to make cleaning your greenhouses a breeze, this Resolva Patio Power Clean comes with a built-in pump for easy spraying!

Another great choice is this Patio Magic 2.5 litres which is amazing value and can treat up to 85 square metres – more than enough, even for a big greenhouse.

A pressure washer is very handy for rinsing away moss and algae after you've treated it – just make sure you keep it on a low setting and use from an appropriate distance so you don’t risk damaging your greenhouse!

Feed your lawn

If you want your lawn to look lovely and thick and green this year, now’s a good time to give it a feed.

As well as making your garden look a lot nicer, a healthy lawn is much more resilient and better able to outcompete moss and weeds.

I’m a big fan of this Westland SafeLawn feed - not only is it made from 100% natural ingredients, it’s also safe for children and pets which Jack is very happy about 🤩

You should aim to use roughly one handful per metre squared, spreading the seed as evenly as you can.

The granules then need watering in, but to make my life easier I try and pick a day when it’s due to rain so it does the hard work for me!

Sow tomato seeds

If you haven’t already, now’s the time to sow tomato seeds.

All you’ll need is a seed tray or set of small pots and any type of multipurpose compost – oh and your tomato seeds, of course!

There’s so many amazing different types of tomatoes you can grow at home, and you'll find a great selection both in-store and online.

Why not try something a little different this year, like this super sweet yellow variety, or these amazing Italian beefsteaks?

First things first, you’ll need to fill up your tray or pots with compost and make a small hole for each seed.

I tend to pop a few seeds into each pot in case some of them don't germinate.

Then all you need to do is keep your seed tray somewhere nice and warm, like a sunny windowsill, and wait for your seeds to germinate.

Just make sure you keep an eye on your soil and don't let it dry out.

Once your seeds have grown into seedlings after a few weeks, you can then carefully remove them – making sure to hold them by their leaves not their stems - and plant them in their own larger pot to continue growing.

The perfect pick

Now is prime time to start planting up your summer flowering bulbs.

For those of you that still haven't chosen yours yet, I thought I'd do a bit of a comparison to show you some of the different types you can choose from.

Summer flowers come in all sorts of different shapes and sizes, with different varieties having their own unique benefits.

Whether you're looking for the best summer flowers for fragrance, cut flowers or container growing, you can find out everything you need to know in my video here!
